Our Jersey Memories

I’ve mentioned before that our boys were born in Jersey, in the Channel Islands.

It’s a time of our lives filled with special memories – ups and downs that we came through, learning to be parents against a beautiful backdrop of sandy beaches and warm sunshine.

I was 5 months’ pregnant with Brodie when we arrived on this island paradise in November 2005. And Blake was a 6-week-old baby when we bid farewell to Jersey and flew back to Scotland in November 2008.

We had ended up there after Mr G was offered a 3-year contract to work on the island. I was going through my third pregnancy, having miscarried two babies in the previous 12 months. And it seemed fate was telling us I should take a career break and concentrate on the family we were so desperate to have.

So we rented out our home, I quit my job, and we took a three-year hiatus in the sun.

Although it wasn’t always easy, becoming parents hundreds of miles away from our friends and family, we made new friends and lots of lovely memories.

Our home was a converted barn in the countryside of St Saviour, about 3 miles outside of St Helier.

We wore flip flops, shorts and T-shirts from Easter til November, it was so warm.

And when Brodie started to find his feet we took him to practise walking barefoot along St Brelade’s beach – where a fall just meant a roll on the sand.

The top speed on the roads – which were mostly country lanes – was 40mph and everyone was so polite I hardly ever experienced road rage (bliss).

Although there was a lot to miss about home, I’ll always be grateful to Jersey for looking after us for those 3 years. To the hospital where my 2 babies were safely delivered. To the friends who sympathised when we were sleep-deprived and shared their experiences to make us the parents we are today.

We left Scotland a couple and returned a family.

But we’d love to go back to Jersey one day for a holiday, and relive some of those special memories.

If you’re in the same boat, then you might want to check out this competition currently being run by the Jersey Tourist Board and the Jersey Travel Service.

Just upload a photo and share your Jersey memory in 100 words or less to be entered into a prize draw to win a two-night break to Jersey for four people, in 4 star accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis, flights from the UK and car hire.

Five runners-up will also get a food hamper from Jersey’s La Mare Wine Estate, while a further five will win a 26-page photobook from Huggler.

The winners will be chosen at random by judges after the closing date of January 17.

  10. What a lovely post Donna, some great memories there. I’ve never been, but would love to go. It’s funny, it’s only since I’ve left the UK I’ve realised how many bits of it I’d never visited. Quite fancy coming back for a few months as a tourist and seeing beautiful spots like Jersey now! xx
